If you are looking for a simple solution to recording video, I think you
could probably get mplayer to record the video (using the -dump option)
and then store it using mencoder in the format of your choice.

I've always dumped video streams (c-span) using mplayer but I'm sure you
could do the same thing with a tv broadcast stream.
