Can you post the output of the 'mount' command? Are you running SELinux? Otherwise I am thinking that there may be something specific to tell it to do in a 64 bit environment, mount-wise, like with regards to block size for example.
Also try
ps -ef | grep usb
to see what else may be interfering, usb-wise. No brainer, but I am assuming you have no other devices plugged in at the moment.
Also, is this the only usb device that has a problem? Do you have another usb device to try, preferably a usb hard drive or another thumbdrive just to see what happens?

It might be simpler to run dmesg after inserting the device, or "tail
-f /var/log/messages" before inserting it, and see what (if any)
device file is assigned.
