This is MATLAB 7.0.0.19901 (R14), the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL trick does not work at all but
interestingly enough under an older FC5 kernel-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp without the trick
matlab is able to run! With the trick it segfaults.

You neglected to specify the version of Matlab you are trying to run.

I'm successfully running Matlab 2006a on fully updated FC5 machines.
Older versions had problems due to the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL trick required
to run the symbolic math toolbox, which simply doesn't work on FC5.
The latest Matlab version doesn't require that hack.
