Same problem with my desktop (search the the list for Dell XPS and you'll find it). The problem
is not in the hard disk most likely but in the BIOS. The way these system freezes were solved for me
is to add the 'noapic' command in the kernel argument at /boot/grub/grub.conf and boot again.
The system has been up and running for three days now with no crash.

Hope it helps,

Hi folks,

While I ran "yum update" on "init 3" following text displayed on the
screen continuously

ata1: command 0x35 timeout, stat 0x50 host_stat 0x24
ata1: command 0x35 timeout, stat 0x50 host_stat 0x24
ata1: command 0x35 timeout, stat 0x50 host_stat 0x24
.......

another occasion was while clearning the installing files after
updating the packages

I have to press "reset" to re-start the PC.

The above text has been displayed occasionally on this PC even not
running "yum update"

What did this line indicate?  How to avoid it.

TIA
