I'm just reading Mad Penguin's preview/review of the next Ubuntu

On page two, he throws out the comment:
Performance with this release was very good. It's been a while
since I reviewed Ubuntu 5.10, but it feels faster to me. Call me
crazy. It definitely outperformed Fedora Core 5 on the same
machine. Hands down.
Not a very analytical statement. Does anyone know if this is true?
If so, why?
(BTW, I found the excitement of the reviewer nice, but the content was
not very useful to me.)
OK this is my take, I know that I cannot give you all quantitative
measurement, but let me share my perception :
I have two identical DIY desktops, Duron 800 MHz, 1GB SDRAM PC133. One
with Fedora always from FC2 4.7, just reinstalled from FC4 to FC5, the
other one for my wife is using Ubuntu 5.10 because its sudo style
instead of having to know the root pasword.
I am used to view DivX movies on the desktop using xine+xvidcore/divx4linux.
When I was in FC4, I have no problem viewing DivX movie, I can jump to
any scene just using the slider. But now after I upgraded to FC5,
everytime I slide, the movie pause for about 3-4 second before continue
the play. Even if I want to stop or pause the movie, xine will response
for 3-4 seconds later.
For the Ubuntu 5.10 it does not have a problem, same as FC4
Another comparison is for Firefox browsing, it feels slow also in FC5. I
notice that if I make the click above a hyperlink and dragging the
mouse, sometimes the pointer becomes the "copy+paste" (with a symbol of
paper into it) instead of the waiting (circling logo) and I ends up
pasting something to another tab windows. I have a feeling that the
system might interpret my click too late, and taking the pointer
position not the same as what being displayed on the screen. I mean, I
click the position (x1,y1), but since it respons later while my pointer
is moving, to another position (x2,y2), it respons to (x2,y2) click. I
still cannot explain the phenomenom very well. Does anybody ever do
browsing using Solaris 8 SPARC with Netscape Navigator 4.71? It has the
same sense of sluggishness.
Just my 2 cents rambling,
Syiwa.
