Try startx instead.

You may have problems, in which case as root run
system-config-display, and make appropriate adjustments.

If it comes up with Gnome instead of KDE, switchdesk is your friend.

I don't know about Mr. Liu, but I boot a number of my boxes to run
level 3, either because I don't want X (e.g. my firewall) or because I
don't trust the hardware or software and want to bring up X separately
(e.g. an experimental box).
