When did [k]ubuntu get a GUI installer? I wouldn't recommend a text based installer distro to a n00b. Kubuntu is nothing but Ubuntu with KDE substituted for Gnome. Both are built from Debian unstable. I have no idea why anyone thinks this is a good idea for a n00b. Xandros is really nice, if your hardware is supported. I've found its hardware support worse than any of the other distros I'm familiar with. FC is my #3 recommendation. A big thing n00bs don't want to hear about on desktops is making NUM behave. We set the BIOS to NUM on at boot. FC makes one jump through too many hoops to get NUM to stay on. It should be automatic for the kernel and X to see the BIOS setting and respect it on Wintel. Mandriva is my #2, mostly because urmpi is decent, and its various support options as a group work well. NUM is on by default for the ttys, a big plus. My favorite SuSE. YaST, though slow, has been reliable (until 10.1), and intelligent. Its main support mailing list is somewhat spoiled by bad attitudes, but otherwise good. NUM is on by default for the ttys. Novell seems to be trying to eradicate its best features, so it may not be my #1 much longer. It's too bad all these can't provide full DVD and multimedia support out of the box.
