One thing that you might be missing is that the classname for nedit is not 
Nedit. It's NEdit. I just checked it using editres.

Personally I much prefer not using Xdefaults and Xresources. I much prefer 
to user XFILESEARCHPATH and XUSERFILESEARCHPATH.
