The problem however is that the application I want to run doesn't work with 
this java version. It does work with the sun version, so that's what I'll be 
using for now.

I'm no expert in java and basically only care about the application to work.
Reading all evening through docs is an option when I have absolutely no other 
choice. For now sun java works for me.
I'll do the reading when I have some more time for it.
