while gcj/gij is impressive and getting better all the time, it is not yet a general "drop-in" replacement for sun's jvm, there is no (secure) browser plugin, some software uses non-standard classes which it doesn't supply, there are some bugs.
If it's one or two packages you want to use, try it now you might be surprised, if you're after a general replacement, try back later ...
