Yeah I have to do that every so often with my Shrike/WinXP laptop. It
wasn't that XP wouldn't boot, though, sometimes when i start it i get
this weird series of console beeps that really shouldn't be there. I
just boot linux, do a #grub-install /dev/hda and it's back to normal.
sometimes the MBR just randomly screws up *shrug* never trust a computer

You may try this one:
" restore grub fedora core 2 after installing xp
- insert installation cd1, reboot and write "linux rescue" and hit enter
- mount the installation (done automaticly in FE2 at least, not sure
about others. If not just mount it)
# chroot /mnt/sysimage (or wherever it was mounted)
- # grub-install /dev/hda
- # exit
- # exit
and its all back to normal "

Subject: RE: Dual Boot and FC 5
OK, I have a working FC 5 upgrade with a good Win Xp partition that
will no
longer boot.
What is the best way to recover to where grub will boot the XP?
From reading the two threads here, and I want to keep grub on the
master
boot record, it looks like I could:
1. Reinstall Win Xp (repair?)
2. Upgrade FC 5 over the current FC 5 installation
And, in any event, save the current MBR (but 512 bytes or 446?).
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
