It's possible that you've got dodgy memory. You wouldn't necessarily notice this in day-to-day use (a fact which I find rather worrying!), but a reinstall involves different use patterns. Try memtest86. It's also possible that you're just having trouble reading the DVD. You could try a minimal install -- choose as few packages as possible, try to get FC5 installed, and then add packages through yum. You could also try a network install, or pre-creating a partition on the disk to hold the ISO image. Boot with linux askmethod, and point the installer at the ISO image.
