I have FC4 on my system and downloaded DVD image for FC5. Also bouth DVD
writer. Writer is identified as

MATSHITADVD-RAM SW-9585, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

Tried to write to DVD using following command and got following errors

growisofs -Z /dev/dvdwriter=/Big-Disk/images/FC-5-i386-DVD.iso
:-[ READ DISC INFORMATION failed with SK=4h/ASC=08h/ACQ=03h]:
Input/output error

[root@usman Files]# growisofs -Z /dev/dvdwriter -R -J
/Big-Disk/lots_of_files
:-[ READ DISC INFORMATION failed with SK=4h/ASC=08h/ACQ=03h]:
Input/output error

I am running 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4 kernel

Is the MATSHITADVD-ROM SW-9585 - not MATSHITADVD-RAM SW-9585 ?
So far, it looks to me as though neither registers as a dvdwriter.

Are you saying that this is not a Writer, or is not reconigzed as a
writer by Linux ? (see blow output of cdrecord).

On other hand, if there is a DVD writter which work well with Linux, let
me know and I can probably exchange for it.

Note: The author of cdrecord should not be bothered with problems in
this version.

When I look at the output I see that your Sony will write cds . When
I look at your Matshita I don't
see write capabilities BUT I've never seen "DVD-RAM" before. If I run
"cdrecord -scanbus" my HP will
be described as HP dvd-writer. As an end-user, who hasn't used the
command line to write cds since
Redhat 9 I'd suggest that you try k3b or xcdroast - also verify
whether or not the Matshita is indeed a writer.
So far, I'm a fan of HP DVDwriters. --gary
Over the past year a new class of DVD writers, super-multi, have
appeared. These drives have the ability to write to DVD-RAM, as well
as the other, better known, media. More recent, high-end, drives
incorporate of ability of writing to the various media types as well
as provide disc labeling (Lightscribe).

Thanks - thats good to know. --gary
