I have a dell 600m inspiron laptop that I recently upgraded to FC5. This was a complete reinstall. When the laptop is idle, the CPU temp, as reported by i8kctl increase. If it sits idle for 30 minutes the CPU temp can reach up to 60C. At that temp, I start seeing problems. With any keyboard activity the fan speed picks up dropping the temp back to 39-40C. I've disabled the screen saver and changed power management setting with no change. I've added /usr/bin/i8kfan -d to my startup programs thinking that it would keep running even if the system is idle. Has anyone experience similar problems or have suggestions to control temps?
Are you sure there is nothing running? Run "top" and see if anything shows up. It is probably the Beagle indexer.
