That's a pretty old kernel. What happens if you
yum update kernel\*
and get the latest Fedora kernel?
James is right, I have noticed appreciable speed up (on fc4) after a typical kernel update in the long chain, can't recall which one,
So go for the latest. Repeat the tests, and post results if things get OK
