FC5 sound -- some apps work, some don't

Just installed FC5.  All applications listed worked in FC4.
All are invoked with a command like Foo sound-file.wav
except amarok and audacity, which are run from their GUIs.
The arts sound daemon is suspended.

xmms: Produces no sound and emits the message
        ** WARNING **: alsa_free(): snd_pcm_start() failed: Broken pipe
        
aplay: Produces no sound and emits no message

amarok: Produces no sound and emits the message
        QObject::connect: Cannot connect QSignal::signal(const QVariant&) to (null)::(null)

mplayer: Works fine

audacity: Works fine

realplay: Works fine


Any ideas what's going on?
