I resolved that problem by using run level 3 instead of 6.
Odd as it may seem.

it'd be difficult to get anything done in runlevel 6, I agree. :P
Runlevel 3 doesn't start x, so naturally it probably wouldn't start
gnome-screensaver and such. I couldn't live with this solution though,
at least, I'd be actively finding another one.
