I have
        [tim@elizabeth ~]$ cat /etc/sysconfig/desktop
        DESKTOP="KDE"
        DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"

I changed from GNOME by editing this file.
I guess as you suggest that ">>" means the line is ignored.
