'parted' has always worked for me.

man parted

E.g.
]# parted /dev/hda1
Using /dev/hda1
(parted) print
Disk geometry for /dev/hda1: 0.000-32075.059 megabytes
Disk label type: loop
Minor    Start       End     Filesystem  Flags
1          0.000  32075.059  fat32
(parted)
