I think it was disabled by default due to a memory leak. I saw an update note that the leak had been plugged (it's a bug in mono, worked around in beagle), so beagled should be safer bet after the first update.
If you've ever used Spotlight on a Mac, you'll probably appreciate the utility of Beagle. I like it.
