I've booted a ubuntu live CD I had at hand, and I can mount the FC5 partitions.

[snip]

#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd2,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora Core (2.6.15-1.2054_FC5)
        root (hd2,0)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 ro root=LABEL=/12 rhgb quiet
        initrd /initrd-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.img

> How are the disk(s) partitioned?

/dev/sda1              /boot
/dev/sda2              swap
/dev/sda3              /
/dev/sda6              /var
/dev/sda5              /tmp
/dev/sda7              /home

I also have sdb, sdc, and sdd, which I mount for storage under my home
directory. For some reason, it seems like some letter-switching is
going on. IIRC, this drive was sdc in my FC4 setup; don't if this has
any bearing on the problem...

Thanks for any ideas you might have...
