I've been through that on other systems. So I had checked that out previously (and again now for good measure). No combination I've tried does anything to make improve the sound quality. And regardless of the mixer settings, using -Dplughw:0,0 works wonderfully, while leaving it off and having the default PCM be whatever system-config-soundcard and alsa have it at, the sound is crackly. I did just find that disabling dmix improves things considerably. I could have sworn I had tried this before, but I must not have had something toggled right.
