"Won't work" is not very informative. What exactly happens when you set
it and export it as shown, then run, eg,
yum update
Look for a thread from me on thsi issue on
console. Seems no solution to this.
I looked at that thread and learned nothing about your yum and proxy
struggle.
I wonder if the issue described at
https://devel.linux.duke.edu/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=441 is still
present? Looking at /usr/lib/python2.4/urllib2.py, the code looks the
same to me.
