(First, I'll second the request someone else made in another thread,
that you quote a bit of context.)

Hm.  Maybe the first question should be "are you sure it's xterm you're
using, and not another terminal emulator?"  If you're right-clicking
the desktop in GNOME, then unless you've done something to change
things, you're probably getting GNOME's terminal emulator rather
than xterm.  Experiment suggests that you can start it from the
command line with a size other than the default by typing

   gnome-terminal --geometry=100x25

No idea how you make that happen when you right-click the desktop.
Maybe someone else can help there.
