There are other means of overcoming this problem in Linux.
I may not know the exact name of it but the feature allows you to have a desktop resolution of higher size and display it on 800x600 (or your choice) real screen resolution. The desktop shifts as the mouse strikes the edge and by other means also!
U may google "Virtual resolution" and other keywords. Even try a search in this list, the problem is discussed in various contexts many times.
