Making an assumption that you log in with a GUI login screen (init mode 5), 
logging out will only bring you back to another GUI login screen.  If you're 
wanting to get to a CLI (command line or text) login, you need to perform an 
"init 3".  That will take you to the CLI login screen.

Just be aware that the next time you restart your machine, it will revert the 
the GUI login unless you edit /etc/initab and change the line that shows 
"id:5:initdefault:"  to "id:3:initdefault:".  The comments above that line 
explain what the numeric modes are.
