Basically, yes they are. YUM actually uses
the RPM database to figure out what is installed, and then checks it against
its database to see what updates are available.

Probably a really stupid question but...
Are packages (.rpm's) installed using "rpm -i *.rpm" plugged into the
yum database too? I mean do they get updated with yum update, etc?
If not, is there a way to make them so?
