You will either need to install PPPoE, or much better, put a router 
between the computer and the modem & let it do all the gritty details.  
It will also give you some protection from the internets bad boys at 
the same time, stopping 99.9% of them before they can even make it to 
your logfiles.  A linksys BEFSR41 is a great little router.  Siemans 
speedstreams, are even cheaper, but will be hacked quicker that than 
you can type your root password.  Or at least mine was.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's
stupid bounce rules.  I do use spamassassin too. :-)
