Confusion abounds with this.
  hdb8 is indeed the 8th partition.  Grub would access it at (hd1,7)
Remember, the partiton table starts counting with 1,  Grub starts
counting with 0.
What grub uses is the _offset_ value from the first partition, while the
partition table uses the numerical value.
