At shutdown the epilogue is not displayed or is not visible.
At boot it switches between 2 resolutions but that is not really a
problem. If something goes wrong during shutdown, I can't see it. Any
way to fix this?

There is an option in the /etc/grub.conf file added to the kernel which hides the shutdown messages. Remove the quiet option from the kernel line. (Usually after the rhgb entry.)
I dislike the blanked screen also. You could press any key
on the keyboard to display the messages also.
