Are you interested in automatic /updates/ or automatic /notification/?
They are different things. IMO, automatic updates are not a good idea.

I also liked the little up2date icon use, but have since switched
to yum (now that FC2 is Legacy). I now get e-mail informing me of
updates. Not quite as nice as the little icon, but certainly usable.
