Same problem here. Sound actually works, but it's muted - I think the
problem is with the mixer. With my multimedia keyboard I can
raise/lower/mute the volume with the sound controls keys, but I get
the same error as you when I try the mixer from Gnome/KDE or
a(lsa)mixer from the console. Still have to investigate further...
