No.

#1 is: I need to build a network install, which is a lot more complicated
that that, and the machines in questions *WON'T* boot on the default
2.6.11 kernel.

#2: The older kernels aren't on the ftp site anymore, and you generally use
the non-smp kernels to build a network install.
