Have you found anything useful in /var/log/secure.
Any attempts which are blocked by /etc/hosts.allow or deny should
show up here.  If he he is blocked and does not show up in the
log (have him test while you are running tail -f /var/log/secure),
they he is getting stopped before he gets to the machine.  Maybe,
iptables or a firewall.
