Dear List,

The problem was related to a corrupted /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config
file. My red hat is off to Red Hat's Bugzilla support group.

If you want all the details take a look at:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=178073

In Summary:

In one of the more recent module updates /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config
became corrupted, but config.bak was left in place. For me to fix the
problem with the gui login, gnomoe and kde desktops all I had to do was
to rename config.bak to config. After the reboot xfs was working
perfectly as well as the gui's.

I have 8 FC4 units in service, and only 3 of these were affected. There
were 5 that had no problems and there was no config.bak file present on
these pc's. In every machine that had a problem, config.bak was
present. Each of these pc's were desktop "E-Machine" units.

It would not surprise me if this problem occurs for others so I wanted
to make sure it became posted until RH can find the affected update
module.

I would like to thank everyone on the list for their help, and in
particular I would like to thank Red Hat's Bugzilla team for their
patience and methodology.

Greg Ennis
