The patent is only the one for longer file names on FAT filesystems.
It is not a patent for FAT in general.
um ... so the concept of supporting longer filenames qualifies as
"novel and non-obvious?" really?
To a judge, yes. Maybe the judge thought the patent covered storing
filenames on someone's body fat. That would bring a new meaning to
*flash* drives ;)
