Tough enough to reboot/shutdown just to get a scan, worse when Windoz
would only come up in 'safe mode'. No time to troubleshoot windoz.

Maybe we (we=Any Linux user stuck with a scanner) get together and
offer the complete pile of scanners on e-bay (thousands of scanners?),
organize a web site, and split the proceeds to get ourselves new
scanners.
