What happens if you run (from the command line): export http_proxy='http://name:abc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx:8080' synaptic You may be able to set this in /etc/apt.conf. I run x86_64, which apt doesn't understand, so I can't test this. Similarly, I can't tell whether you'd have to be root to try the above.
