You might be better off using 'strings ~/mbr.bak', rather than a pure
'cat'. My system (using grub) shows:

[root@songspire ~]# strings mbr.bak
ZRrI
D|f1
GRUB
Geom
Hard Disk
Read
 Error

Of course, we are assuming that you installed lilo/grub in the MBR, not
elsewhere.
