There is a great media payer called VLC (http://www.videolan.org/) but it is extremely hard to install and I really would like non techies to be able to use it. It is in the Debian "unstable" repository but not in a YUM repo yet. How does one go about getting it and its dependencies into a repo?

It's already in the Livna repository.

http://rpm.livna.org/

Enable the livna repo, then

# yum install vlc
