On two occasions my system has frozen while running the makewhatis cron.weekly job. I haven't had any other problems with the machine, the other cron jobs and any other processor-intensive tasks seem to run fine. The cron.daily makewhatis (which just updates with pages modified in the last 24 hours) also is OK. I realise that the cron.weekly job must have run successfully many times without causing a crash.
