To this end, edit the line id:5:initdefault: by changing the 5 to 3 in /etc/inittab. Then, instead of what you did, create a file called .xinitrc (note the dot!) in your home directory, containing the following line: exec /path/to/window_manager where you replace the obvious with the actual path to your preferred window manager. And by the way, icewm is smaller than gnome and kde, but I'm not sure it's the smallest. Look into the *box managers, like blackbox, fluxbox, and the like.
