In same FC4 both xine and mplayer installed, xine works fine, but mplayer has very very weak audio - only can hear the dvd film sound when turn hardware and software vol to max but still can hear very little, equivalent to 1/4 sound level when played with xine.
I used yum installed from livna.

Quite late but no one else has taken it...

Have a look at the man page for the exact details but this shouldd help:
mplayer -af volume[=<v>[:]]
his will add an audio filter that <v> Sets the desired gain in dB for all channels in the stream from -200dB to +60dB, where -200dB mutes the sound completely and +60dB equals a gain of 1000 (de-
                     fault: 0).
                <sc>
Turns soft clipping on (1) or off (0). Soft-clipping can make the sound more smooth if very high volume lev- els are used. Enable this option if the dynamic range
                     of the loudspeakers is very low.
WARNING: This feature creates distortion and should be
                     considered a last resort.

ex: mplayer -af volume=10 media.avi
