try renaming the gnome directory under the user's home directory and then log out and log in again.
This will reset the settings to default.
If this fixes the problem - you can alway go back to your data and change the desktop related files only.
And, you should *NEVER* login as root to GNOME - only su to it under a console inside of a user login.
