Do you get sound through the headphones? If so look at my earlier post: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2005-November/msg01945.html (where I wrote active I meant activate). Although I am using a Dell laptop, so I don't know if this would apply to a Compaq as well. But I guess it is worth a try.
