I've played Doom3 (and Doom3 ROE) under FC4/x86-64, I assume that being
based on the same engine (and same Linux code), the Quake 4 code is no
different. (I'll be getting Quake4 once I see it).

Anyways, which sound driver do you use? Alsa or OSS? More-ever, how did
you configure it?
I had severe sound problem with Doom3 (choppy sound) till I tweaked my
Alsa configuration. 
Once I configured Alsa, I got a clear 5.1 sound out my Audigy 2ZS /
Logitech speakers setup.
