You probably can convert from mbox format to maildir format - I don't
know how to do that but I'm sure there are instructions.

My recommendation, use cyrus-imapd - it is blazingly fast. Considering
that a change from mbox to maildir is not without pain, changing from
dovecot to cyrus-imapd gives you the whole enchilada.
