In the past, I've seen the hosts file get manipulated by other things (e.g. the disastrous linuxconf), and it put other things above the localhost line. Of course, the few people who read that "do not remove" line interpreted it literally, and some mangled the important localhost line. I think the warning should be a bit more explicit. e.g. Something like this. # The hosts file should contain the local loopback addresses like this: # 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost Even if that means some duplication. i.e. An uncommented version below the example of it.
