I had the same problem. I think it was as a result of my OO somehow
pointing to the Sun JVM instead of the GCJ one. To fix, take a look at
this bug report:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=48919
Follow the instructions from jl near the end of the report. On my system
running javaldx, this automatically created a javasettings_Linux_x86.xml
file that pointed to GCJ. Then I no longer got the error you posted.

Ever since I upgraded to open office 2.0, Sun Java is no longer available, no matter what I do.
I have had random crashes, too, sometimes when I click the mouse button, sometimes when scrolling. It has not been a huge prtoblem, though, as I use the program most days and have only had about 3 crashes in all (in 1 week, approximatley). Also, the recovery system works fine.
