It's good to have good password practices, as well as disable the root ssh
login.  Users requiring root permissions and capabilities should login as
a regular user and su to root...

In terms of a "counter-measure" or some level of defense against the
attacks, I'm fond of denyHosts

Thanks to everyone who responded to my reply.
I closed ssh for root, checked pws and installed denyhosts running as a cronjob regularly which is really enough for me.
